Jane is fictitious but her words were very real and can often be heard in conversations across the villages and towns of the Bega Valley and beyond.

She represents the many young women of the Far South Coast who were so cruelly disadvantaged over the closure of maternity service at Pambula District Hospital.

Jane speaks out against what she sees as the degradation of human rights that resulted from actions taken by the NSW Health Department under the leadership of The Hon. John Della Bosca BA MLC, The Hon. Barbara Perry, The Hon. John Hatzistergos, and The Hon.Carmel Tebbutt.

During 2008, 2009 and 2010 she wrote 20 letters to Health Ministers Della Bosca, Perry, Hatzistergos and Tebutt in the hope that they might begin to see the plight she and her friends faced. None of her letters were answered.

Read Jane's earlier letters, none of which were ever answered

3. The new hospital in Bega won't be built for a while 4. Having a baby should be a joyous occasion

7. My own doctor knows me and what to do if I have trouble 8. My girlfriends and I trust our local GPs and nurses
9. I reckon there has been some unfair trickery going on 10. The Auxillary was talking about our nurses leaving

Jane Hope is a fiction - she died but now returns.

Driving from her home south of Kiah to Bega Hospital to give birth, Jane was killed in an horrific car accident, caused by speed, the dark night and a meandering kangeroo.

Her ghost now returns to continue her original fight, tis time on behalf of the many young women who today still experience the same unconscionable pressure of having no maternity service available at their local hospital.

With a new government in place whose hopes and promises heralded in a new era of humanity in health care it is hoped that things might quickly change for the better. Jane's ghost has not seen evidence of this yet.
